前期、火曜日の午後は東京学芸大学での授業があって火ゼミには出席できないのだが、2009年4～7月までの火ゼミの予定を読みなおしてみたら、
6月2日 Jonathan Coopersmith (Texas A&M University) “The Rise and Fall of Faxing: Lessons of Decline”
と書かれている。Jonathan Coopersmith さんとお会いしたのは1990年代の前半、私に直接連絡があって、火ゼミに招いて発表していただくように動いて、火ゼミが終わってから百年記念館で記念写真を撮影し、大岡山の居酒屋へ出かけて行ったような記憶がある。
今週の発表を聴くことはできなかったがファクシミリの歴史のようで、私としても関心のあるところ。以前はロシアの電化について研究書を出版されていた（表紙写真）。

書名にあるように、ロシアの十月革命前からネップ期あたりまでの技術史である。ここで詳しい書評をするつもりはないが、私としてはこの時代が電気工学の形成期でもあるということに着目したい。Charles P. Steinmetz が Lenin にロシアの電化に協力を申し出る手紙を出し、Lenin から謝意を込めた返書を受け取ったということが知られているが、もっと古い時代においては電気工学という体系的な科学は存在しなかったのである。
3月30日には、IEEE Student Branch at Tokyo Institute of Technology主催の講演も開かれていたようだ。
Electrification of Russia and Formation of Electrical Engineering
These days, I cannot attend Kazemi (Seminar on History of Science and Technology almost every Tuesday at Tokyo Institute of Technology) since my classes at Tokyo Gakugei University. I awared a topic in Kazemi schedule in April to July, 2009.
June 2, Jonathan Coopersmith (Texas A & M University) “The Rise and Fall of Faxing: Lessons of Decline”
I had met Prof. Jonathan Coopersmith in early 1990s. He contacted me directly and I arranged his session in Kazemi. After the session, taked pictures in the Centennial Hall, then we have a banquet at a pub in Ookayama.
I cannot attend the session in this week on history of the fax, but also interesting to me. He had previously published a book on the electrification of Russia.

As the book title, it is an history of technology before the October Revolution to the NEP, New Economy Plan, era. It is difficult to review in detail here, but I wish to focus on the time is the formative period of electrical engineering. As is well known, Charles P. Steinmetz wrote a letter to Lenin to offer assistance the electrification of Russia, and Lenin wrote a thanksful reply. At that time, electrical engineering was established based on complex number, however, electrical engineering as a systematic science does not exist in older age.
On the other hand, IEEE Student Branch at Tokyo Institute of Technology hosted a session on March 30.
